In verses 4-16, the author reminds us that (1) we need patience to help us now and in the future.
(2) When we are not sure of the right path to take in a given situation we should ask God for wisdom, and then consider His word and the counsel of mature and godly people for God's answer to that request, without worrying that the Lord will be disappointed that we have to ask.
(3) Once we have the good wisdom, we need not doubt its effectiveness and continue on in obedience to it.
(4) Verses 9-11 remind us that we are mortal and only have a limited time in this earthly realm to learn the ways of God and to treat people with respect and kindness no matter our station, or theirs in life.
(5) Keep fighting the good fight of faith against the temptation to do evil that we may be crowned with a good and honorable life in front of all to see (v. 12).
(6) We are not to say that God led me into an evil act because He doesn't do that. Our own inner desires if left unchecked will hurl us into situations that can be sin or a chance to overcome and bring endurance.
(7) Verses 14-16 identify the pattern of sin for us, and if we will identify it as it begins to happen then we can take the steps necessary to short circuit the process and get out of the temptation by resisting and enduring. Every temptation is a test to do the right thing just as much as it is to do the wrong thing.
